Andrew H – Peterlee Returneeship 2018

Focusing on a change

Andrew’s work background had been focused on warehousing and stock checking. After a period of working for agencies, Andrew became unemployed. The work came to a stop after a requirement was introduced for warehouse workers to have a licence, which Andrew did not have.
The Returneeship was advertised in Peterlee Job Centre Plus and it was his work coach who suggested that Andrew should come and speak to a tutor from Release Potential. Andrew liked that the course was focused on helping people, gaining some work experience and updating his CV.

When Andrew came to start the Returneeship, he was excited to gain some qualifications. After being introduced to the different roles, Andrew opted for interviewing and getting behind the camera. He also got involved with photography and five of his pictures were shown in the montage. Andrew enjoyed helping other people on the course, whilst communicating with local businesses and gaining ‘people skills’.

By the end of the course, Andrew felt the Returneeship had given him a huge boost in confidence which prepared him for his work placement at Hordon Parish Council. Subsequently, Andrew has completed voluntary work including some time at East Durham Partnership. Andrew realised through his time on the Returneeship that he possessed many transferable skills which, along with his newly gained skills, has allowed him to explore new opportunities. With a strong interest in gardening, Andrew will be starting training in the near future in order to change sector.
