Anne-Marie N – Barnsley Returneeship 2018

Editing a new role

Before becoming unemployed Anne-Marie had worked at a children’s centre, been self-employed with her ex husband and then worked in retail sales as an assistant manager. It was in this last role that she suffered from bullying in the workplace by a manager which resulted in Anne-Marie suffering with depression and anxiety. Although Anne-Marie tried to sort the situation out with the manager she was told that she could no longer be in the workplace. This left her unemployed and as her confidence was so low and she was fearful of being judged Anne-Marie found it difficult to find more work.

It was two years later that Anne-Marie heard about the Returneeship at a group meeting at Barnsley Jobcentre and deciding that she had nothing to lose, signed up. While keen to undertake the course she was still afraid at the start, understandably, based on her last work experience. However, these fears were quickly quashed as she took on the role of an editor during the first two days.

The rest of the course flew by “I went home buzzing everyday while on the course and I have gained my confidence back.” Before Anne-Marie knew it, the course was finished and she says “with my placement I am getting back to my old self.”

Looking positively towards the future, Anne-Marie’s aim is to be back into permanent work and thanks the Barnsley Returneeship for giving her the confidence to do what she wants.
