Chester Returneeship – Jim K

In April 2019, the Returneeship course made its first appearance in the walled city of Chester. From the first day, the staff knew it was going to be a great course. One learner, Jim Kemp, wrote a poem to sum up his experience on the course. Please see the poem in full below.

They came from the East; they came from the West,
They came from the North East…but don’t worry, they didn’t kick off!

Apprehension loomed large when attendees first met,
Over two weeks ago and who would have bet,
We’d have enjoyed it so much and worked together so well,
All gaining in confidence and come out from our shell.

Daymon was the first to welcome us here,
Making it clear from the start we had nothing to fear.
He looked like a Greek waiter with a permanent tan,
His enthusiasm infectious, his ethos ‘You can!’.

And here we all are, now having survived,
Not knowing what to expect when we first arrived.
It began with a test, to show what we could achieve
Remembering 20 photos in order, who would have believed?

Then there was a chance to step into the unknown,
Working with the film crew and outside our comfort zone.
‘The One Show’ was fun and we all played a part,
Lights, camera, action and we’d made a great start.

It was Paul, Beth and Jess who then helped us discover
New approaches and techniques to try to recover.
By making some changes, we can get off the dole
Better equipped to realise our goal.

The proof it can work has been clear to see
Both Fiona and Ryan finding jobs successfully.
Imagine what we can achieve in the same way
Apply what we’ve learned and it will soon be our day.

I may have presented and felt a little showbiz
But the highlight for me was the morning quiz.
It was great to see we all know different things
From American presidents to Bjorn Borg wins.

For me, it was enjoyable to come in each day
You’re a likeable lot in your own weird way.
They said if you put into it, you will get a lot out
Everyone can feel proud, of that there’s no doubt.

I’d like to finish by thanking you all,
To the film crew and tutors, especially Paul.
But the biggest thank you I would like to say
Is to all my course mates for the laughs each day.
